Range Hood Rescue: Restoring Airflow and Stainless Steel Finish

Over time, heavy cooking grease had completely coated this kitchen range hood. The buildup was so severe that it was beginning to clog the intake grates, putting unnecessary strain on the exhaust fan motors and significantly reducing the unit's ability to properly vent smoke and odours. The stainless steel finish was totally obscured by a sticky, hardened layer of grime that standard household cleaners couldn't cut through. Instead of replacing the unit or risking motor burnout, I used WD-40 to break down the grease and restore the hood to full working order.
Steps Taken to Repair:
Assessment and Preparation (Before): I inspected the range hood and identified that the heaviest grease accumulation was concentrated around the intake grates and the front control panel, restricting airflow and making the buttons difficult to press. I ensured the power to the unit was turned off before beginning the repair.
Product Application: I applied a generous, even coating of WD-40 Big Blast directly to the heavy grease deposits across the stainless steel canopy and carefully around the intake grates, as shown in my photos.
Penetration and Removal: I allowed the WD-40 to sit for several minutes. The solvent action effectively penetrated and dissolved the hardened, sticky grease buildup that was choking the vents. Using a clean microfiber cloth, I was then able to wipe away the dissolved grime smoothly without needing abrasive scrubbers that would scratch the metal.
Final Polish and Restoration (After): Once the heavy grease was removed, I used a fresh cloth to do a final wipe down, removing any remaining residue. This process fully unclogged the intake grates to restore proper airflow to the exhaust fans and completely revived the original stainless steel finish.
