Vanity Light Revival: Erasing Bathroom Rust in Minutes

Plus 4 more

Over time, daily steam and humidity in the washroom had taken a toll on the metal base plate of our vanity light fixture. It had developed a heavy layer of speckled surface rust and oxidation that made the whole bathroom look old and neglected. Because it’s a hardwired electrical fixture, replacing it wouldn't just be expensive—it would require shutting off the power, removing the mirror, and doing electrical wiring. Instead of going through that massive hassle, I turned to WD-40 to see if I could rescue the metal and restore the finish.

Steps Taken to Repair:

Assessment (Before): I inspected the light stand fixture and identified that the brown spotting was surface rust caused by trapped moisture. I made sure the light switch was off and the bulbs were cool before starting the repair.

Product Application: Because the fixture is mounted directly above a glass mirror and painted drywall, I carefully aimed the WD-40 Big Blast nozzle and applied it to the rusted metal surface, ensuring the affected areas were saturated.

Penetration and Repair: I let the WD-40 sit for a minute so it could penetrate the oxidation and displace the moisture trapped in the metal. Using a clean microfiber cloth, I applied firm pressure and wiped the fixture. The WD-40 easily dissolved the rust spots without me needing to use abrasive scouring pads, which would have permanently scratched the brushed metal finish.

Final Polish (After): A final wipe-down removed the remaining residue. As shown in the "After" photo, the corrosive rust spots are completely gone, and the original brushed texture of the fixture stand is restored. This quick repair saved a perfectly good fixture from the landfill and completely refreshed the room without any electrical work!
