Basement development for my 87 year old Dad who moved in with us
We finished our basement after 15 years, my Dad expressed his desire to move in with us. We are a family of four, my husband, my two kids and me, now we are 5. We had a contractor fraud where the contractor walked away with our saving we had accumulated in our kids account, so we were left with the only option to complete the development ourselves. We started in Dec 2022 and accommodated my Father temporarily in the kids room. I work from home, and my husband works full time. We would work on the basement after work during week days and weekends. We invited our kids to help us my son then 8 years old and my daughter 5. They helped us paint the walls once drywall was completed, they helped layout the laminate floor tiles. WD40 made door installations easier and all the cabinets we put in including the closet doors. Installations and maintaining the structures and our hard work. It took six months of dedication and family team work to finish the basement and we have never felt prouder and stronger as a family. My kids proudly shared the renovation project with the class fellow when asked how their winter and spring breaks went. Tough times don’t last, my Dad enjoys his new space, where he has his privacy and to be able to watch his grand kids grow. We have learnt to watch our blessings in disguise. We had to apply for a small loan as our savings had been depleted and we are slowly paying it off. Winning this contest would help us tremendously as my Father was recently diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and I stopped working to care for him and family. The time we have left together we want to make the best of it. We know we will, we have come this far and we are sure we will win other battles too.
