Ducati Monster Bike Restoration

Over the last year, 2023-2024, WD-40 has helped bring my 2005 Ducati Monster S2R back on the road. I purchased a non-running Ducati motorcycle with the mission of hearing the Air-cooled V-Twin Engine. From drilling and rebuilding the fuel pump and wiring harness to breaking loose stubborn rusted Exhaust bolts, WD-40 has been the #1 resource. After breaking loose stuck spark plugs, changing timing belts, sprockets and chains, rebuilding suspension forks and calipers, my Ducati is now road ready. Thank you WD-40 The Air-Cooled V-Twin Ducati sound was well worth the effort!

Step 1

Purchased a 2005 Ducati Monster S2R with the hope of getting it on the road again. The bike was cranking over but did not start :( This began the troubleshooting of finding out what was wrong with the bike.

Step 2

Now excited with the bike at home, the project started with changing the timing belts, new spark plugs, breaking loose the caliper bleed valves on the front brakes after being seized, and changing the air filter. After all this the bike still did not run. So the project continued…

Step 3

On trying to start the bike numerous times, I narrowed it down that the bike had spark from the new spark plugs and air from the fresh air filter put in but was not getting any fuel. So on taking the gas take out, putting in a new fuel pump it still did not work… After putting everything back together I realized that no power was getting to the fuel pump due to a broken wiring harness inside the fuel tank. Taking the fuel assembly out once again, with the help of WD-40, I re-drilled the wiring harness and created new connections epoxied back together. And Success the bike started!

Step 4

Now that I got the engine running it was time to get the rest of the bike ready. With updating to LED front turn signals and rear brake light, I also changed the sprockets and chain which definitely needed lots of WD-40 to break loose the rusty front sprocket and chain. Then it was onto rebuilding the front suspension forks with new seals and fluid. Progress!

Step 5

The last step to get the bike ready for the road was fixing the exhaust leak by taking the exhaust off and repairing the seal gap. Rusted on bolts made this job take longer than expected, however thankfully WD-40 did what it does best and that is penetrating through stuck bolts and help break it loose.

Step 6

Thank you WD-40. This was a fun hobby project with lots of new learning experiences. The 2005 Ducati Monster S2R is complete and sounding amazing! See you on the Road.
