Rusty Old Patches

This project is a clean-up showing the condition of my garage floor Before and After the removal of rust using WD-40.

Step 1

My son moved away to work two and a half years ago. When he came home his car that had been stored on our garage would not move because the brakes had rusted. The car had to be towed to a service station and this is the mess that was left behind.

Step 2

From reading the uses for WD-40 Multi-Use product I found that it could be used to remove rust stains from concrete. When I suggested this to my son he replied “WD-40 is mainly a lubricant and it won’t remove the rust”. I knew it was much more than a lubricant and that it would be useful in penetrating the rust. So to prove my point I got to work on the big corner patch of rust. First I swept up the debris from the floor.

Step 3

Then I sprayed WD-40 generously on the rust patch and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Step 4

After 10 minutes I scrubbed the spot with a wire brush.

Step 5

Next I cleaned the spot with a rag and scrubbed a little more

Step 6

Finally I washed the area with water and Voila! I was impressed.

Step 7

I showed my son the end results, gave him the can of WD-40 and left the rest of the clean-up in his capable hands. I am sure that from now on he will look at WD-40 differently - it is not just for lubrication but has thousands of uses, removing rust from concrete being only one of them.
